How to read your energy bill

The short answer

Your energy bill has five parts that matter: your tariff, your readings, your unit rate, your standing charge and your balance. Find those and you can check the whole bill.

The parts of your bill

Tariff name and end dateThe deal you're on and when it ends
Unit rate (p/kWh)The price for each unit of energy you use
Standing charge (p/day)A fixed daily charge, whatever you use
Readings: A, E or CActual (read by the supplier), estimated, or customer-provided
kWh usedEnergy used this period
MPAN (electricity)Your electricity supply number, usually shown in a grid of boxes
MPRN (gas)Your gas meter point reference number
Meter serial numberShould match the number on your meter
Estimated annual costWhat a year costs at your current use and rates
VAT5% on gas. No VAT on electricity used from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 (normally 5%)
BalanceIn credit (they owe you) or in debit (you owe them)

Three checks worth doing every time

  1. The meter serial number matches the one on your meter.
  2. Readings are actual or customer, not estimated.
  3. The rates match the tariff you agreed to.
