Homes in England and Wales can't switch water company, so the savings come from checking how you're charged. Bills rose by about 26% in April 2025 and are forecast to rise by about £33 more in 2026/27.

Five checks
Would a water meter be cheaper? If you live alone or in a small household, often yes. Meters are usually fitted free on request, and many companies let you switch back within a set period if it costs more. [Check your company's rules.]
Are you paying for surface water drainage you don't use? If rainwater from your roof doesn't drain into the public sewer, you can ask for a rebate.
Could you get a social tariff? Every company runs one for low-income households.
Are you eligible for WaterSure? It caps metered bills for some households on benefits with large families or certain medical conditions.
Has a leak pushed your bill up? Many companies give an allowance for leaks on your side once they're fixed.
In Scotland, water charges are collected with council tax; in Northern Ireland, households don't pay domestic water charges.
