The three free texts
| Text | To | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| PAC | 65075 | A code to keep your number (valid for 30 days) |
| STAC | 75075 | A code to leave and get a new number |
| INFO | 85075 | Whether you are in contract, without getting a code |
Your provider must reply by text within a minute. The reply must include any early termination charges, or your credit balance on pay as you go (Ofcom).
Step by step
- Choose your new deal first, and check you are happy with the price and the contract length.
- Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to move.
- Read the reply. Note the code and any early termination charge.
- Give the code to your new provider. It must arrange the switch within one working day (Ofcom).
- Put the new SIM in when your new provider says it is ready.
Asking online instead
You can also ask for your PAC in your online account. Your provider must give it within one minute, just as it would for a text. If you have more than one number on your account, you need to ask online. On pay as you go, the reply also shows your credit balance.
What your providers cannot do
- Charge notice after you leave. Ofcom has banned mobile providers from charging for a notice period that runs after your switch date.
- Take longer than allowed. If the switch is delayed or you lose service for too long, you may be owed compensation.
- Double charge you. Giving your new provider the PAC or STAC lets both providers avoid overlapping charges.
Good to know
- If you are still in contract, you might have to pay an early termination charge. Text INFO first.
- If you do not want to keep your number, use STAC instead of PAC.
- Phones sold since 17 December 2021 should not be locked, so your phone should work with a new SIM. Ask your provider about older phones.
- If you hit a problem, complain to your provider. After 6 weeks, you can take it to a free ADR scheme (Ofcom).
Frequently asked questions
How long is my PAC valid?
30 days. After that, text PAC to 65075 again for a new code.
What is the difference between a PAC and a STAC?
A PAC lets you keep your number when you switch. A STAC is for when you are leaving and do not want to keep it. Both let your providers avoid charging you twice.
Will I be charged for notice after I switch?
No. Ofcom has banned mobile providers from charging for any notice period that runs after your switch date.
What if I am still in contract?
You might have to pay an early termination charge to leave. Text INFO to 85075 first, or read the details in your PAC reply, before you decide.
What if the switch takes too long?
Your new provider must complete it within one working day. If it is delayed or you lose service for longer than allowed, you may be owed compensation. Ask your provider how to claim.
