Prepayment meter problems and your rights

The short answer

Suppliers can only force-fit a prepayment meter as a last resort, and never in some homes, such as where everyone is over 85 with no other support. If you're on one, you can ask to switch back once you're clear of debt.

When a supplier can't force-fit a prepayment meter

Under Ofgem's rules, forced installation is ruled out for households including:

  • people over 85 with no one else in the home to help
  • people with a terminal illness
  • people whose health would be put at serious risk by losing heating or power
  • homes where nobody can physically top up the meter

Before any forced installation, the supplier must try to contact you at least 10 times and carry out a welfare visit.

Problems topping up?

Ask your supplier about emergency credit and extra support credit, and join its Priority Services Register. If you're struggling, see help paying your energy bill.

Switching back to a credit meter

If you have no debt and pass a credit check, your supplier must agree to move you off prepayment.
